Harlandale ISD students attend National Youth Summit at the ITC

More than 20 Harlandale ISD students in grades 8-12 participated in the 2019 National Youth Summit at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) on May 21.

The ITC, in partnership with the National Museum of American History and Smithsonian Affiliate museums, hosted the regional youth summit in San Antonio to mark the 100th anniversary of the passing of House of Representatives’ resolution in support of the 19th Amendment.

During the event, students watched the webcast, “Woman Suffrage: The Ballot and Beyond,” which was streamed online from Washington, DC. Students heard from women activists Caty Borum Chattoo, Page Harrington, Dolores Huerta and Naomi Wadler, who spoke about the woman suffrage movement and its effects on woman-led activism today.

“This was a great opportunity for our students,” Terrell Wells MS Social Studies Teacher Patty Perez said. “I can teach them their TEKS and what is in the books, but only until they can actually see and hear the real stories of woman suffrage from real leaders can they truly put things into perspective and see how they are connected to it.”

Following the live broadcast, a panel of San Antonio leaders including activist Rosie Castro, Alamo Colleges Trustee and Former Harlandale ISD Superintendent Yvonne Katz and District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, continued the conversation. Each speaker spoke about the importance of equal voting rights and encouraged all students to become involved in their communities.

Amara Hernandez, eighth-grader at Terrell Wells MS, left the event feeling motivated to use her voice.

“It was really interesting to hear their stories and how much they’ve accomplished in their careers,” Amara said. “They highlighted on how we should always vote to let our voices be heard, so I plan to vote because I learned that we have the power to create change.”
