Harlandale ISD takes first ‘Leaver Walk’

A total of 32 Harlandale ISD staff members spent their Tuesday morning knocking on 95 homes as part of the district’s first ‘Leaver Walk’ of the school year.

The main goal was to make contact with the families of students that withdrew last school year and that currently show no verification of enrollment in another Texas Public School.

“Some of the students may have moved out of Texas, are in private school, may have gone out of the country, or may not be enrolled in any educational setting,” said Katherine Pena, HISD Pupil Personnel Administrator.

Through the walk, teams made up of staff members from HISD secondary campuses were able to help recapture students by providing additional resources and support in enrolling in school.

Students not enrolled in an educational setting by Sept. 30 will be considered a leaver drop-out by the state.

Another date will be set for a follow up for these students as well as any student that did not return to HISD for the 2016-2017 school year after the summer break.

“Many of them did move out of district and enroll in their own neighborhood school, but our role is to ensure those not in their neighborhood school have contact information for our campuses, have a list of optional program and resources and help remove any barriers to enrollment,” Pena added.
