Harlandale ISD names new athletic director

Coach Roseann Martinez

A familiar voice has penetrated the walls of the McCollum High School gym for the last nine years, one that commands both authority and grace. And now this voice will be reverberating in a different manner.

The search for the Harlandale ISD athletic director is over with the selection of seasoned McCollum High School Head Coach Rose Ann Martinez, she is the first female athletic director in Harlandale ISD history. Martinez brings solid experience in athletic administration from the high school level.

As a 1989 graduate of Harlandale High School, Martinez experienced early success with her initial coaching position at Incarnate Word High School, where she earned State Championship births from 1993 to 1994 in the volleyball and basketball programs. Her assistant coaching stints also took her to Bi-District playoff and State Finalist appearances at Taft High School. Before returning to Harlandale ISD, Martinez continued her leadership roles as head volleyball coach of Holmes High School from 2003 to 2009.

From 2009 to 2018, Martinez served as a girls athletic coordinator, physical education department head, and head volleyball coach at McCollum High School. As head volleyball coach, her program earned four consecutive District Championships (2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017), five Bi-District Playoff appearances, two Area Championships and two Regional Quarter finalists appearances. Her McCollum Cowboys volleyball team also received the 2015 San Antonio Sports Team of the Year Award and throughout her tenure some players have received Express-News All-Area Volleyball Team recognitions as well as All-State All Academic notoriety. What is even more significant is that Martinez’ teams received 100 percent All-District All-Academic awards in all of her nine years at McCollum High School. Martinez leaves the sidelines with more than 360 wins under her belt.
