Students from Gilbert Elementary are leading the way to a healthier and more active San Antonio by participating in the Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassadors Program.

The Student Ambassador Team at Gilbert Elementary was awarded $1,500 to assist in launching a healthy service project at their school campus that will benefit the campus and the student body.   As part of the "It's Time Texas Community Challenge" students have received commitment signatures from their campus administrators, District Superintendent, and School Board members!

Their first “Healthy Moment” event was at Mustang STEAM Night, Science Fair, and Health & Wellness Night on Jan. 25.

The students educated attendees about the negative effects of soda and sugar drinks on the body and encouraged families to stay hydrated and healthy by preparing healthy drinks and foods.  Ambassadors also provided samples of non-sugary agua fresca and samples from a ¡Viva Health! healthy recipe options that can be found at: www.sanantonio.gov/Health/HealthyLiving/VivaHealth

Ambassadors, Jackie Guerra, Jacob Hernandez, Joe Vasquez, Ashley Henley, Alexandra Hernandez, and their campus mentors Jennifer Montes and Anayanse Garza were selected to represent Gilbert Elementary in June 2017.  Since the beginning of the academic year the Gilbert Elementary student ambassador team has been working on identifying ways that they could best serve at their campus to help bring about a better awareness of health, physical fitness and better nutrition initiatives.  The ambassador team was tasked to dream up, map out and develop a healthy service project to work on for the 2017-2018 academic term.

Harlandale High School Mayor’s Fitness Council Student Ambassador Kina Rodriguez also received a $250 check for her Mental Health Spotlight Focus Project.

Carroll Bell Elementary Mayor’s Fitness Council Student Ambassadors titled their project: Cook it Up! They did not request funding because they are pulling from their own resources.

Way to go, Harlandale ISD Mayor’s Fitness Council Student Ambassadors!
