Harlandale Middle School students participated in the 15th annual Artpace Chalk It Up event on Oct. 13.

The free festival of contemporary art transforms Downtown Houston Street into a colorful gallery, showcasing local emerging artists and raising funds for art education.

A total of 10 Harlandale Middle School students from the Positive Experiences in Art, Culture and Environment (PEACE) Club participated in the event along with HMS teachers Amy Jones and Leora Uribe.

Their final mural depicts a picture of a Lady Brave standing before a sunset. She facing a glowing "300" in the clouds, referring to San Antonio's 300th anniversary.  They also wanted to address the success the school had last year, so they put six fireflies flying around the Lady Brave, and a banner over a large tree that read "The more stars we earn, the brighter we are", referring to the six distinctions HMS earned last year.

Harlandale Middle School has participated in Chalk It Up for at least the last seven years and hope to continue the tradition for years to come.

Way to go, Braves!
