HISD custodian joins Harlandale PD

Peter Sebastian Hernandez has proudly worked for Harlandale ISD as a custodian for 10 years; however, his dream has always been to be a police officer.

On Monday, Sept. 25, his dream will come true.

Hernandez will not only begin his new career as a police officer, but will also return to the same school district where he has been working for during the last decade. Even better, in the same department.

The 36-year-old was in charge of cleaning various school departments at HISD, which included the Police Department.

His dream was always on the back burner, but now he feels happy to begin this new chapter in his life.

“I’ve always wanted to be a police officer, but I always put it off, something would come up, and then we had kids,” he said. “Now that I’m getting older, I decided to finally try it.”

For Hernandez, the opportunity to come back to the same group of friends is more than he could ever ask for.

“I’m so happy! I already made a lot of friends and family here, and so when the opportunity came up to come back and work here, I was excited,” Hernandez said.

A beloved custodian in all his departments, Hernandez was surprised with a farewell breakfast on Friday, where he was surrounded by family and staff.

He is looking forward to return to the same district buildings, but now sporting his new police uniform – something he has worked hard for during the last year.

“I feel excited because it’s something new,” Hernandez said. “I’ve been training and going to school since January. Now, I’m ready to go into the real world and use my knowledge and tools.”

With the support of his family, Hernandez hopes to give back to the community.

“I’m excited to just get out there and meet the community, making sure that the schools and children are safe,” he concluded.
