Joan Kunkler named Instructional Assistant of the Year

Columbia Heights’ very own Joan Kunkler received the HESA Today Instructional Assistant of the Year award.

She was nominated for the recognition by Columbia Heights special education teacher Mary Woomer.

“I have known Ms. Kunkler for 14 years – all my tenure at Harlandale,” Woomer explained. “She was my assistant the first year that I worked as a teacher in Harlandale. I was very fortunate to have her again as one of my assistants in the Autistic Unit at Columbia Heights for the past three years.”

Woomer explained that Kunkler simply performs as a teacher.

“Without any direction from me, she sees what needs to be done for each individual student and does it,” Woomer said. “She also goes above and beyond supplying craft materials and snacks for the classroom.”

She added that Kunkler is always on time for duty and is extremely dedicated.

“She volunteers to work with some of our most needy students, sometimes with injury to herself,” Woomer explained. “She loves them unconditionally.”

Columbia Heights Principal Santos Flores expressed that Kunkler has not only given unconditional love to her students, but to the faculty and staff as well.

Congratulations on your well-deserved award, Ms. Kunkler!
