Local author Diane Gonzales Bertrand visited Bellaire Elementary on May 21.

Bertrand, a professor in the English Literature and Language Department at St. Mary’s University, has published several books featuring Mexican-American characters.  She has written bilingual picture books such as “We are Cousins/Somos Primos,” “The Bean and Cheese Taco Birthdays/Un Cumpleaños con tacos de frijoles con queso” and “The Party for Papa Luis/La fiesta para Papa Luis.”  She has also written poetry, novels and short story collections.

First through fifth grade students enjoyed a presentation given by Bertrand.  She shared how, even though she was raised speaking English, her writing has always been influenced by her Mexican-American culture and the local community.  She is always looking at her surroundings for ideas to include in her writing.

Bertrand spoke to students about their own writing and being an author.  She discussed how students should always use verbs, use lots of details, and use their five senses in their own writing.  She also reminded students that everyone needs to make revisions when writing, even published authors must make revisions.

Students were smiling and laughing as she read a passage from her book “Upside Down and Backwards/De cabeza y al revés.”  Many of the students seemed to relate to the story.

Bertrand encouraged students to continue reading over the summer.  She reminded them that the public library is always a great place to get books to read.  She also encouraged them to look for other books written by local authors.
