McCollum High School senior Juan Covarrubias signed his letter of intent to continue his education and basketball career at Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) on May 22.

Administrators, coaches, teammates, family members and friends gathered at the Main Gym to celebrate the milestone and congratulate the talented center.

“I’m extremely proud of him,” MHS Basketball Coach Marcus Alvarado said. “He dunked for us, he blocked a lot of shots, but it was his leadership that set a good example of what a Cowboy student athlete should be. We wish him the best of luck.”

Juan’s high school basketball career was filled with great moments, including winning the 2017 District 29-5A Championship and being named the 2018 District Defensive Player of the Year.

“Hopefully, what Juan is doing here can let future generations of Cowboy basketball players know that it’s possible to make it to the next level,” Alvarado added.

Juan is excited to move to Minnesota and continue to play basketball and enter RCTC’s nursing program.

“I feel really good, a little nervous, but I’m looking forward to playing against new people and being in a different environment,” he said. “Ultimately, I want to be an RN.”

Congratulations, Juan!
