The McCollum High School One Act Play cast was named district champion at the UIL One Act Play District competition held at Southwest Legacy High School on March 10, advancing to the Bi-District round.

A total of 10 students participated in the contest and performed “Taking Leave” by Nagle Jackson. Working as a team, they competed against seven different schools, including Harlandale HS, Winn HS, Floresville HS, Southside HS, Legacy HS and Uvalde HS.

For McCollum HS Theatre Director Kevin Cox, advancing to the next round is a true testament to the students’ hard work and commitment to the play.

“It was a huge reward for all of their hard work and overcoming adversity,” Cox said. “We had to replace three of the six actors in the show the week of the contest with three relatively inexperienced sophomores. The seniors really stepped up and helped prepare and guide the alternates that now had major roles on stage.”

Ultimately, McCollum was ranked 1, 2 and 2 by a panel of three critic judges. Several students also received individual awards. Devon Garza was named outstanding technician, Michael Roberts was named All Star Cast and Robert Soto won Best Actor.

“I am so proud of their resolve and refusal to give up when faced with a daunting challenge,” Cox concluded.

Congratulations, MHS students!
