MHS soccer player signs with Iowa Lakes Community College

McCollum High School senior Leslie Cruz proudly signed her letter of intent to play collegiate soccer at Iowa Lakes Community College on May 22.

With her mother and sister sitting by her side, Leslie was congratulated by her coaches, friends and MHS Principal Jacob Garcia.

“I want to extend my congratulations to Leslie and her family, I know this is a culmination of many days, weeks and years of hard work and dedication,” Principal Garcia said. “We are witnessing the beginning of a new chapter, a new opportunity, and we’re excited that you’re going to represent us in a new city, new place and new school.”

As a talented forward, Leslie has a lot to be proud of. She is the captain of the team, a four year letter winner, earned a spot on the All-District First Team and was named the District Offensive Player of the Year.

“Leslie is very tenacious and driven. She is the epitome of an athlete, always competing, and we look forward to her moving on to the next level,” MHS Girls Soccer Head Coach Christina Urbina said. “She scored 32 goals this season. It’s very impressive because she amassed 97 percent of our goals. I am very proud of her and wish her all the best.”

Leslie’s instant connection to soccer began when she was just 8 years old.

“I picked it up just to have fun, but now it’s something that I enjoy doing and want to do it forever if I can,” she said.

She credits her support system in and out of the court for helping her achieve all of her goals and dreams.

“It’s truly a blessing. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my teammates, family, and, of course, coaches,” she said. “I’m looking forward to going to a different state, meeting new people and building new friendships. I’m super excited.”

Besides playing soccer, Leslie will pursue a career in criminal justice.

Congratulations, Leslie!
