MHS Speech and Debate students advance to State

Hard work and preparation is paying off for the McCollum HS Speech and Debate team. The Cowboys had another successful UIL Regional Meet on April 8.

The team consisting of Nicholas Quintero, Celeste Ramirez, Jason Zertuche, Michael Roberts, Christian Ferniz, and Serena Gutierrez competed against the best of the best in all seven of the individual speech events and they are proud to announce that they have advanced two individual team members to the UIL State Meet in May.

Junior Michael Roberts placed fourth overall in the Region in the Poetry Interpretation category and officially qualified as the first alternate to State.

Senior Serena Gutierrez placed third overall in the Region in the Prose Interpretation category and officially qualified to represent McCollum as one of the top 12 individuals in the State in her event. This is Serena's second appearance at State as she qualified last year in Cross Examination Debate, but this will be her first time competing in the Prose category.

The team has worked hard over the last seven months to prepare for this opportunity and is happy to see their hard work paying off. Still fresh into what is only their second year as a team, the students are proud to have the opportunity to represent McCollum and Harlandale ISD at the State level and bring more success to the community.

The team, led my speech teacher Jeannae Bierstedt, expressed gratitude toward Principal Jacob Garcia as well as the rest of the MHS administration team, the MHS faculty and staff and the Harlandale community for their continued encouragement and support.

The State Meet will take place at The University of Texas at Austin on May 21-22.

Good luck, Serena and Michael!
