MHS speech and debate students prepare for a day in court

McCollum High School’s UIL Speech and Debate team is gearing up for the school's first ever participation in the San Antonio Regional Mock Trial Competition. The team will go head to head with nine other schools from the San Antonio area on Feb. 11.

Mock Trial is an act or imitation trial where a team of 10 students will role play as witnesses and lawyers in front of an actual judge and jury.

Representing McCollum as prosecution and defense lawyers are Alexandra Vazquez (12th), Serena Gutierrez (12th), and Alexis Garcia (11th). Representing McCollum as the expert witnesses are Jocelyn Lopez (10th), Celeste Ramirez (11th), Sarah Garza (12th), Catherine Brooke Valdiviez (11th), Edwin Rodriguez Martinez (12th), Alicia Casas (12th), Destiny Ochoa (12th) and official timekeeper Nicholas Quintero (9th).

The students will not only get the opportunity to compete at the actual Bexar County courthouse, but they are also getting a unique opportunity to be mentored by local defense attorney and OLLU board member Andrew Borrego.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Borrego graduated from Jefferson High School, received his undergraduate degree from UTSA, and his Juris Doctor from St. Mary's University. He is currently a practicing partner of Moreno and Borrego Law, PLLC.

 Good luck, Cowboys!
