LULAC Upward Bound Math and Science students from McCollum HS had the opportunity to participate in DreamWeek as part of San Antonio’s 300 Tricentennial events on Jan. 20.

The students spent their Saturday listening to the DreamWeek panel entitled, Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere.

Featured speakers included:

  • Mr. Gary Bledsoe, President of the Texas Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
  • State Senator José Menéndez
  • Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar
  • District Attorney Nico LaHood
  • Chief of Police William McManus

State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins served as the panel moderator.

“Students were able to hear from their local/state government officials and law enforcement with an open discussion about some of the injustices they face as young people,” said Elizabeth Gongora, LULAC Upward Bound Math and Science academic coordinator. “They were able to see how their voice does make a difference and received great advice from the panel.”

LULAC Upward Bound Math & Science students have the opportunity to participate in local events such as this as part of their academic Saturdays.
