MHS students register to vote

Volunteers from the Educators Voter Registration Initiative (EVERI) helped McCollum High School seniors get one step closer toward exercising their right to vote.

The organization held a voter registration drive in all government and economics classes on Sept. 21.

“The goal is to register as many eligible students as possible,” Sybil Morgan said. “We are very neutral, we’re completely nonpartisan, we’re completely apolitical, and we don’t do anything to coerce or pressure anyone who doesn’t want to take the opportunity.”

A total of 105 students and two teachers seized the opportunity.

“I am very pleased with the amount of new voters we registered,” McCollum HS teacher Mr. Ronald Pearce said. “I believe that voting is an important civic responsibility for all ages. My hope is that our students will become lifetime voters. Your vote is your voice.”

A second drive will be held in the spring for students who were not eligible to register yet.

“The earlier you start to be civically engaged, the more it becomes a habit of life and we just want to see people get off to a good start,” Morgan added.
