MHS CIS writes Christmas Cards for nursing home seniors

Communities in Schools of San Antonio (CIS-SA) and the Literary Club at McCollum invited students to write heartfelt messages on Christmas cards for elderly patients at Windsor Mission Oaks Nursing Home on Dec. 6.

More than 120 students and the McCollum Cowboy happily participated during their lunch period. Many students wished the nursing home seniors a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year while others included personal messages to brighten up their day.

McCollum HS’s CIS-SA Coordinator JJ Chavez helped organize the event to support the school’s writing initiative to increase academic writing and help spread holiday cheer.

“We want to use the power of words and writing to spread the message of good cheer during the holidays,” Chavez said. “The students are doing a great job writing in the greeting cards and decorating the envelopes!”

McCollum HS junior Ruby Auces was excited to participate and send out her card.

“If they are alone or not alone, I just want them to know that people are thinking about them,” Ruby said. “I want them to be happy and to know that there is someone out there giving them hope, blessing them, praying for them, and spreading love towards them.”

Once delivered, the nursing home staff will be able to read the cards to their patients and use them to decorate their rooms.

Way to go, McCollum HS students!
