MHS theatre students learn from ‘Jersey Boys’ cast

A total of five lucky McCollum High School theatre production students attended a master class with the cast of the National Tour of the Broadway Musical “Jersey Boys” at the San Pedro Playhouse on Dec. 8.

The five students selected to attend the class show unwavering dedication to the art of acting and are hoping to pursue a theatre degree after high school.

During the master class, the cast talked about life in the industry and gave advice on auditioning.  The cast also worked with students individually on songs and monologues.

“The experience is something that will stay with them forever,” MHS Theatre Director Juan Calderon said. “When talking to these professional actors, my students realized that they have the same fears and professional aspirations. They were able to connect to their heroes on a personal level and this will do wonders for their confidence and education.”

The night before the workshop, these same students went to see "Jersey Boys" at the Majestic Theatre.
The free tickets and the master class were courtesy of the Las Casas Foundation, whom HISD Fine Arts has a partnership with.

Calderon expressed his gratitude toward Fine Arts Director Omar Leos for helping them grow as a department and a Fine Arts family.
