In an attempt to break a Guinness World Record, HISD Mariachi Instructor Edwardo Cantu took 32 students from Leal MS and Harlandale MS to the "El Cotton Picker" Mariachi Festival in Robstown, Texas on April 14.

Mariachi bands from across the state were invited to take part in the event and to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most mariachis playing in unison.

“We were told after the attempt that we had 724 participants which is enough to break the record,” Cantu said. “Now we are just waiting on Guinness World Records to let us know when it’s official.”

Once official, the student names as well as the schools and district names will be included in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The students also got to see high school competitions and meet other mariachi students from all over Texas at the festival.
