Harlandale ISD middle school students unlocked a fun mystery during this year’s second Math Problem Solving Tournament at Leal Middle School on Dec. 2.

Hosted by HISD’s C&I Math Department, the tournament featured six teams made up of four to six students. Together, each team had to unlock a series of math problems to solve “The Lake House Mystery.”

“Each problem provided clues that allowed the students to figure out the combination of four different locks, and they also had to successfully solve a Sudoku puzzle,” HISD K-12 Mathematics Coordinator Gaby McMillian said. “Once all five locks were removed from the Breakout Box, students solved the mystery!”

Students had a great time learning about team cooperation and persistence as they solved each problem, which included calculating combinations, solving inequalities, calculating probability and percentages.

“Many students said they had fun, and they really enjoyed the event,” McMillian added.

The Kingsborough MS teams took first and second place with the help of their coaches Caroline Macias and Keli Hall.  Third place went to a team from Harlandale MS, who was coached by Jessie Mendez and Patricia Keller.

“Teachers and students really did a wonderful job,” McMillian concluded.
