McCollum HS Band wins ‘Outstanding Percussion’ award at Seguin Marching Festival

The McCollum High School Band won the “Outstanding Percussion” award at the first annual Seguin Marching Festival on Sept. 30.

The competition, hosted by the Seguin Marching Band, was held at Matador Stadium and welcomed 13 area marching bands including: Randolph, San Marcos, McCollum, Harlandale, Stephen F. Austin, Lockhart, Smithson Valley, Bastrop, Nixon-Smiley, Flatonia, Shiner, Del Valle and Judson High Schools.

This was the band’s first competition of the school year, which motivated the students to do their best.

“The band was so excited to win first place out of 13 high schools,” McCollum High School Band Director Gilbert Borrego said. “They have been practicing so hard since the summer, so it’s a good place to be in this early in the year.”

This was also a unique competition for the students since they received immediate feedback from the judges after their performance, which was something that had never been done before.

“As soon as we were done with our preliminary performance, the judges talked to the wind players, percussion players and color guard, and they gave us that feedback right away,” Borrego added.

The students were taken to a band hall where they were able to see a clip of their performance and use the critiques and tips to make the adjustments prior to the finals.

“It was great to see because the kids got to critique themselves right away and see what they messed up on or what they can fix in the future,” Borrego said.

The judges also shared ideas on how the band can improve a few visual aspects, such as the interactions between the soloists and color guard.

“We’re excited to try and incorporate some of that a little more into our design,” Borrego concluded.

Congratulations, McCollum High School Band!
