McCollum HS celebrates Decision Day

A total of 345 McCollum HS seniors proudly proclaimed their post-secondary plans in front of their peers and parents in honor of Decision Day on May 16.

The event serves as an effort to build up a college-going culture and to celebrate the seniors’ hard work and achievements.

“They spend countless hours submitting applications for colleges, scholarships, financial aid, and now is the time of year when it all pays off,” McCollum HS College Adviser Kimberly Taylor said. “Whether they’re going to college or enlisting in the military, we’re proud that they are making a commitment to themselves to reach beyond high school.”

Taylor has seen the number of seniors planning to attend college grow throughout the years, and she credits that to the establishment of a college-going culture in the community.

“Our students have seen their siblings, cousins and friends start making the decision to attend college,” Taylor said. “We have had a strong team this year that the students have been able to utilize for any of their college-related questions or needs.”

The campus has also seen a growth in college application numbers and FAFSA submission, which statistically makes it more likely for students to attend college.

“I am so immensely proud of our seniors,” Taylor said. “They have all overcome a variety of adversities but shown strength, determination and positivism. They are going to make such a positive impact to each school they’ve decided to attend.”

Way to go, Cowboys!
