The fun in reading and writing came to life at McCollum High School’s Second Annual Literacy Night on May 3.

Students and parents packed the cafeteria to take part in hands-on activities that promoted the art of literacy.

The event featured open-mic presentations, a thrilling pirate-themed escape room, book-giveaways and engaging literacy games.

“Literacy Night is here to promote reading, writing and the importance of listening attentively and speaking eloquently,” McCollum ELA Department Chair Cynthia Tamez said.

San Antonio native and three-time slam poetry winner Anthony Flores was also on hand to perform some of his original works.

Students listened intently, performed some of their own works, participated in spelling competitions and made origami.

“Literacy is a lifelong skill and students really need to know that it doesn’t stop when high school finishes,” Tamez said. “High school is not just about passing your STAAR test, it’s about loving reading and writing.”
