McCollum looks to earn a share of volleyball district title

The 29-5A volleyball district championship lays in the hands of the McCollum Cowboys after a very tough district schedule the week of Oct. 17.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys defeated the Harlandale Indians three sets to one in front of a packed Harlandale HS gymnasium.

“The atmosphere was a positive example of the pride of the Southside,” McCollum Head Coach Rose Ann Martinez said.

Martinez was proud of the adversity shown by her team.

“I was very impressed with the way our girls handled the pressure of the crowd while we were under attack. They did an amazing job,” Martinez added.

Tonight, the Cowboys take on the undefeated Southside Cardinals at 7:00 p.m. in the Dennis Smith Gymnasium on the campus of McCollum HS. With a win tonight, the team will earn a share of the 29-5A District Championship with the Cardinals. Though a tie-breaker game is still undecided, the Cowboys will collect their third consecutive district title with a win tonight.

“We are excited to be in this position. The girls have worked hard to continue the winning tradition at McCollum and I think they’ve done a pretty good job at it,” Martinez said.

Though the Cowboys have not gone deep into the playoffs the past two seasons as Martinez and the team would have liked, they are confident that this is their year.

“Our expectations are to go deep into the playoffs and make the Cowboy community feel as excited as we are to represent McCollum High School,” Martinez explained.
