Middle school students participate in academic competition

Approximately 50 Harlandale ISD students made their way to Terrell Wells Middle School last Saturday to take part in the district’s middle school UIL meet.

The meet featured 14 events in different subject areas including art, mathematics, science, social studies and English language arts, among others.

Students began practicing in the fall and their hard work paid off as many of them received awards for their scores.

Harlandale ISD Social Studies Coordinator Rubina Pantoja was one of the leads behind the successful meet.

“We are glad to have re-introduced the middle school UIL competition this school year. We feel it is important to give students opportunities to participate in academic competitions,” Pantoja said. “It was nice to see the competitive spirit of the coaches and students.”

She added that it was a great learning experience for everyone involved, from district staff all the way down to the students.

“If anything, we’re better prepared for an even bigger competition next year,” Pantoja said.
