Morrill Elementary hosts Fairy Tale Bowl

Morrill Elementary School second-grade students tested their reading comprehension skills during the school’s first annual Fairy Tale Bowl on April 25.

Divided into six teams, the young readers competed in three exciting rounds, answering a variety of questions about the books they had read.

Teacher Librarian Desiree Benavides organized the event to prepare the students for the Battle of the Books next year.

“We hosted our first annual Battle of the Books last year, and our second graders wanted to participate, so I told them that I would have the Fairy Tale Bowl for them this year,” she said. “They were really excited to have an event that promotes reading.”

The students had to read 20 fairy tale books, including 10 traditional fairy tales and 10 fractured fairy tales.

“The students learned more about fractured fairy tales, which are humorous versions of the traditional fairy tales,” Benavides explained. “They also learned how to work in a team because they would read and quiz each other on the books in the classroom.”

The friendly competition also helped increase comprehension levels and reinforce the TEKS.

Benavides was happy with the feedback she received from students and parents and hopes students feel motivated to continue to read in the future.

“Reading is fun and enjoyable. We want them to explore a variety of books. The library is a place where learning happens and reading for both pleasure and academic success in encouraged,” she concluded.
