Panel empowers Leal MS girls

In honor of Women’s History Month, Leal Middle School Texas History teacher Amanda Garcia hosted an empowering panel for seventh and eighth grade girls.

With the help of English teachers Olivia Robinson and Maribel Hermosillo, Garcia brought in a diverse group of panel speakers including documentary filmmaker Laura Varela, La Botanica co-owner and chef Rebel Mariposa, Harlandale ISD Police Officer Linda James and B. Michele, owner of B. Michele Events.

“The purpose of the panel was to honor women that are trail blazing in business and labor,” Garcia said. “We really wanted to bring in female entrepreneurs and a female police officer who is in a male dominated field so that they can empower, encourage and inspire these girls.”

The speakers spoke about their trials and triumphs leading up to their successful careers. Topics varied from pursuing a higher education and finding a mentor to having a close group of girl friends to support them along the way.

After the event, students personally went up to the presenters that resonated with them the most and got one-on-one time.
