Parent volunteers and AVANCE partnership helps Bellaire thrive

For Bellaire Elementary, Volunteer Appreciation Week meant celebrating Bellaire’s selfless parent volunteers.

Principal Leticia Rodriguez and Social Worker Wilma Gibson hosted an appreciation breakfast for their parent volunteer group at Don Pedro’s Mexican Restaurant on April 25.

These volunteers are particularly special as they commit to many tireless hours of work, planning and executing the many tasks and events for the campus daily. This is possible with the help of AVANCE- San Antonio Inc. and the four-year long partnership on campus, which provides a Parent Room for parents to volunteer and make teachers’ jobs a little easier.

The parent room serves as a hub for volunteers to work on copies, laminating, preparing for attendance incentives and plan events like Science and Literacy Nights.

At the core of the parent room, is parents working alongside administration and faculty in creating an educational experience for students that is meaningful and engaging.

On average, there are 19 parent volunteers, each serving an average of 160 hours during the 2016-2017 school year.

Collectively, these parents have totaled almost 3,200 volunteer hours during this school year and are constantly looking at ways in which they can improve the school.

The parent room partnership with AVANCE’s Parental Engagement Initiative provides a wealth of parent resources at the Resource Corner and at the Technology Corner. They provide computer access for job searches, registering for school, seminars and even e-mailing their child’s teacher. The room also provides a pantry of school supplies and other basic needs for students and families of Bellaire.

Parents also conduct parent-to-parent home visits throughout the school year in order to build a sense of community and support system for parents.
