Rayburn Elementary hosts Career Day

Rayburn Elementary students explored different professions in honor of Career Day on Feb. 17.

A total of 14 different career professionals ranging from firefighters to engineers and architects visited the campus and gave students an insight on their day to day duties.

Rayburn Counselor Nichole Nava hosts the event every year to get the students thinking about their future.

“I really want our kids to think bigger and work harder,” Nava said. “I want to expose them to things that they are not familiar with, so that they know that there is something else out there.”

When she preps the students for career day, they’ll often say they want to work for restaurants like Peter Piper Pizza because they want to take pizza home every day, but their aspirations seem to change after they are exposed to different career possibilities.

“When I prep them, they may not know what an entrepreneur is, or what an engineer or architect does, but after career day, I’ll hear them in the halls saying they want to go to college to be an architect,” Nava added.

Presenters all underscored the importance of pursing their passion, staying in school and never giving up.
