STEM ECHS National Honor Society gives back to community

STEM Early College High School’s National Honor Society partnered with ACE to collect donations for families in the Harlandale Community.

STEM ECHS Senior and NHS President Alma Celis wanted a good service project for her members to participate in and once she heard about the clothing closet and pantry that the HISD Social workers provide for the community, she knew that was the best way for NHS to volunteer their time.

“For the past month and a half we collected clothes and hygiene products from STEM ECHS students, faculty and staff members,” Alma said. “Our whole campus really came together to make this a huge success and it's really heartwarming knowing that we are giving back to our community and helping those in need.”

STEM ECHS is the only high school in the district to have ACE on campus, and although ACE has only been at STEM ECHS for two years, STEM ECHS ACE Coordinator JJ Chavez is always trying to get the students involved any way she can. So, when NHS came to her with the idea, she was excited to help in any way possible to make this a reality.

“The HISD social workers and ACE were involved, but the students really spearheaded the project and got the ball rolling on their own, they saw a need and wanted to help out,” Chavez said. “This was not only a great cause but also a leadership opportunity for our students. It makes me very proud to see our students become such driven, kindhearted young adults.”
