Southwest Research Institute inspires GT students

Harlandale ISD fifth grade GT students had the exciting opportunity to visit the Southwest Research Institute’s Robotics and Automation department this week.

As part of the trip, students got an overview of the research institute, toured the labs and saw robots in action. They also had the opportunity to interact with engineers and scientists to talk about STEM education and career paths.

“I love robotics so this is the best field trip I’ve ever had,” Schulze GT fifth grade student Paul Anto said.

He started learning about robotics in third grade, but doubted he could one day be a full blown engineer.

“My thinking was that it looked too hard for a guy like me to handle, but after coming here I know I can do it,” Paul said.

Paul and his peers were fully engaged throughout the trip and made excellent questions and comments.

GT teacher Kimberly Chason was excited to see her students so enthused during the demonstrations.

“Overall it has been an inspiring trip,” Chason said. “The students were engaged, focused and very interested in learning more about engineering and everything else.”
