In honor of National Red Ribbon Week, Stonewall Flanders Elementary hosted a special luncheon for first responders on Oct. 25.

Kindergarten through fifth grade students got to spend quality time with the police officers while they enjoyed a delicious lunch. McGruff the Crime Dog also made a special appearance, giving kids high fives and making them laugh.

Stonewall Flanders ES Counselor Joseph Manjarrez expressed the importance of thanking first responders for keeping the community safe.

“Today, the kids are dressed up as superheroes, but they are learning that the real superheroes are the first responders,” Manjarrez said. “We want to thank them for everything that they do for us, especially when they help our kids to ‘just say no’ to drugs.”

The school’s creative parents decorated the halls with patriotic banners and balloons as a sign of gratitude for their service.

The police officers sat down with the students and shared the dangers of drugs and alcohol with them.

“It was great talking to the kids and building that positive relationship between us,” Harlandale PD Corporal Salomon Elizondo said. “If we teach them now to say ‘no to drugs,’ it will be a constant reminder for our kids to avoid that type of lifestyle.”
