Harlandale ISD Superintendent Rey Madrigal held his first meeting of the school year with members of the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) on Sept. 26.

The committee is made up of 6th through 12th grade students from the Harlandale ISD who display qualities of excellence in education, leadership, citizenship and community service.

The purpose of SAC is to place high achieving students in a leadership role that will give them one-on-one access to some of the top administrators in our district.

The first meeting, held at STEM Early College High School, kicked off with Madrigal introducing Assistant Superintendent of Finance Richard Hernandez, Executive Director of Human Resources Diana Tudyk, Executive Director of Operations Gerardo Soto and Public Information Officer Natalie Bobadilla.

Afterward, the students introduced themselves and learned about upcoming district events in the community. The superintendent enjoyed meeting with the middle school and high school student representatives to learn their perspective on what’s happening on their campuses.

He explained the importance of their input as it has led to changes in the district, including upgrades in the curriculum and cafeteria menu changes.

“I want to commend you all for being here,” Madrigal said. “You’ve shown your leadership ability to your teachers, classmates and administration, and now your responsibility is to be an advocate of your school and come and share with me what’s going on, the achievements and challenges.”

During the meeting, Madrigal also encouraged them to ask questions and raise concerns. Among the topics discussed were the services offered at Harlandale ISD School-Based Health Clinic and the new Anonymous Alerts app.

By the end of the meeting, each student was asked to write what they enjoy about Harlandale ISD and something they would like to see different in the district on a notecard for Madrigal to review.

Madrigal will meet with the students three more times during the school year. The next meeting will take place Nov. 28.
