Harlandale ISD Benefits Coordinator Elizabeth Guajardo has a new favorite shake and it tastes like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup straight out of a blender, but it’s much healthier.

The 300 calorie shake is a heavenly concoction of peanut butter, bananas, coco, honey and soymilk.

“I love it and I look forward to it every day,” Guajardo exclaimed.

The tasty shake is one of the many ways she is taking control of her health through the Real Appeal program.

Real Appeal is a 52 week interactive program geared toward weight loss and healthy lifestyle changes.

Any Harlandale ISD employee on the district health plan that has a BMI greater than 23 percent can qualify for the free program.

Once enrolled in the program, participants will receive a free success kit filled with workout DVDs, a pedometer, step-by-step guides, a scale, recipes, cooking tools, a blender and much more.

The goal is to encourage employees to live healthier lifestyles, which could in turn reap positive results for everyone.

“We have found that good health and good nutrition go hand in hand with something that is close to everyone’s heart, which is our insurance rates,” Guajardo explained. “So right now we are experiencing the trend of raising insurance rates and there is a direct correlation between the health of our employees and our insurance rates.”

If employees improve their health and are able to get off medications, lower claims could ensue.

“We are hoping to start to see healthier life styles, healthier employees that in the end will show some kind of indication on our health insurance rates,” Guajardo said.

As part of the program, participants also have virtual weekly group sessions where they learn about different activities and topics.

“I think that’s really important because it provides that extra support that you may need,” Guajardo said. “So if you’re on this journey, yes it takes sacrifice and yes it takes commitment, but it helps when you have other people there to support you.”
