In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Terrell Wells Middle School students and families enjoyed a “Noche de Tradiciones” (A Night of Traditions) on Oct. 11.

The first annual event celebrated the contributions of notable figures from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

“The purpose of the event is for students to get connected to their roots,” Terrell Wells Middle School 7th grade ELA teacher Zuleica Olvera said.

The sixth and seventh grade students presented their research projects to the attendees. Once the visitors made their way through the cafeteria and listened to the different projects, they were treated to “pan dulce” (sweet bread) and hot chocolate.

Latin music played throughout the cafeteria and a beautiful altar created by AVANCE parents set the mood for the cultural event.

Olvera is already making plans for the second annual “Noche de Tradiciones.”

“It’s an event to stay, it’s not going to go anywhere,” Olvera said. “Next year my goal is to have it expand throughout the school, this is kind of like a test run and it’s going to keep continuing every year.”
