Veterans present flags to first-grade students at Gilbert

Flags presented to gilbert

Gilbert Elementary received a surprise visit from the VFW Post 9186 and U.S. Marine Corps Veterans Wednesday morning to present all first-grade students with their very own United States flag.

“The post commander, Robert K. Otto, wanted to do something to share his pride for our great nation and decided to bring the flags to the students,” Gilbert ES Social Worker Jennifer Montes said.

The students listened intently as the veterans talked about pride, respect and the importance of the nation's flag. They were also given an information sheet with the history of the United States flag for them to learn more about how the flag came to be.

Each student received their own miniature version of the stars and stripes with a wooden pedestal to display their flag.

“Principal Longoria is hopeful that this will become an annual visit and that first-graders will continue to receive the gift of the U.S. flag for years to come,” Montes concluded.
