World shows support to Leal MS students

Leal MS eight grade ELA teacher Cynthia Coronado noticed that her students seemed overwhelmed with testing and were lacking confidence, so she decided to do something about it.

Coronado started a Facebook group to ask friends and family members to write short letters of support to the students last week as STAAR testing was fast-approaching.

She summoned the support of eight grade ELA teachers Suzanne Sherman, Melissa Quintanilla-Vasquez and Elizabeth Serna. Before they knew it, they were flooded with kind words from around the world.

Inspiring messages from Australia, Japan, Mexico, Australia, England and the Netherlands started rolling in. The Kidd Kraddick Morning show sent in a photo from the studio and Councilman Rey Saldana sent in his encouragement from Rio de Janeiro.

The teachers compiled all of the photos in a video that opened with Paulo Coleho’s inspiring words, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

The students watched the video on Monday, the day before the STAAR test, in awe.

“Every student was affected differently,” Coronado said. “Some were in disbelief that people from all around the world would take the time to do a kind gesture for them and others were feeling motivated to do well because so many people believed in them. At the end of the day though, they knew that regardless of why or who did this, the only thing that mattered was that we cared for them, even though it wasn’t said aloud, we felt it.”

The teachers were also overwhelmed with the result.

“I felt really emotional to see the support not only that our students had, but us as well, so many people appreciate our careers and our future generation, it was truly beautiful to see and experience this moment.”
