Wright Elementary hosts magical Author’s Day

Wright Elementary discovered the fun in reading and writing with a Magic School Bus themed Author’s Day celebration on May 18.

This is the school’s second annual Author’s Day and it serves as a way for the students to share their writings and to hear from guest readers.

“The students write all year long, they publish their works and present them for Author’s Day, so they truly become the authors for the day,” Wright Elementary Academic Coordinator Victoria Trevino said. “It is so exciting for them to see the connections between reading, writing and becoming authors.”

The campus featured 25 guest speaker  including Univision Anchor Brenda Jimenez, La Prensa Editor Lucy Almanza, School Board Vice President Ricardo Moreno, Rick Cavender and many others.

“It was important to reach out to the community because we want them to come out and talk about their experiences so that the students can see them as role models,” Trevino added. “We hope that they are inspired to grow up to be like the community members that visited the school and that they realize how important reading and writing is.”

The campus was beautifully decorated with different themes from the Magic School Bus book collection. One hall took you under water while another took you to out to space.

“It really is a team effort,” Trevino said. “It was our teachers, our cafeteria staff, our custodians, everybody! It was a true community effort.”

Campus Principal Ms. Martha Gonzales dressed as Ms. Frizzle while Trevino and School Counselor Garnell Harris dressed as Lizzie, Ms. Frizzle’s chameleon lizard.

Last year, the campus began an Author’s Day tradition with a Dr. Seuss theme. It was a tough event to top, but Wright did it again.

Now, they’re brainstorming ideas for next year.

Terrific job, Wright!
