With thousands of students across the state taking online classes, Harlandale ISD decided they needed to take some steps to make sure all their students had easy access to internet connectivity.

Now thanks to fully installed Harlandale ISD Student Wi-Fi hotspots, online distance learning will be easier to access for all students across the district.

Albert Rosales-Korrea, the district spokesperson, said the district wanted to make sure and bring easy access to online learning technology and information.

"With help and support from the Harlandale ISD Board of Trustees and our Superintendent, Mr. Gerardo Soto, we are making sure to accommodate our students as best we can especially in homes where families don't have great access to broadband or multiple devices with internet access," Rosales-Korrea said.

Knowing where the most need would be helped the school board and district administrators decide on the different areas across the district that are now designated as "Wi-Fi Zones".

While some district locations already have buildings with Wi-Fi access of their own, the Harlandale ISD Information Services Department made some changes so that the Wi-Fi signal would reach a larger area.

Students can access the signal being transmitted by more than 50 district school buses strategically parked across the district and the additional 100 external access point antennae on district buildings.

The bus signal access points can transmit a radial signal ranging up to 600ft in diameter, while the buildings have a directional signal being transmitted ranging up 300ft. This enables families to use multiple devices to access the network with their students.

"Their school issued devices will connect automatically and families that have a personal device can use their student's login to connect a personal device," Rosales-Korrea said.

The purpose of this initiative is for families to drive to one of the locations, park, and download their kid's assignments from the safety of their vehicles or to pick up the signal being transmitted from the buildings.

“We want to thank our school board for supporting this decision which will impact student learning and success. We also want to thank our Information Services Department who worked diligently to install, setup and coordinate the programming of all the Wi-Fi Zones.
