HISD announces open enrollment period and changes to insurance benefits

Harlandale ISD’s open enrollment period will take place from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1. Open enrollment is the time of the year employees can select or edit their benefits, which will become effective on Jan. 1, 2020.

Open enrollment for 2020 will be passive, which means that most of the benefit selections for 2020 will “roll over” if employees do not make changes. Flexible Spending Accounts will not reactivate in 2020, so employees must re-enroll for their account to remain active.

Online self-enrollment will be available during the open enrollment period, and enrollment assistance will also be available at select campuses during the month of October.

“I am excited about open enrollment this year,” HISD Benefits Coordinator Elizabeth Guajardo said. “Harlandale was been recognized locally in 2018 by the Mayor’s Fitness Council, and for 2019, we received national recognition by the American Heart Association. These recognitions are a direct correlation of Harlandale’s commitment to wellness and choosing a healthier lifestyle.”

Guajardo also stated new changes are coming in the group insurance benefits for the 2020 benefits period.

“Medical rates are decreasing, and plans have been enhanced to include out of network benefits,” Guajardo added. “The Board of Trustees also approved an increase of $25 to our group health contribution, which will provide much needed relief for employees who participate in the District’s group medical plan.”

Employees will see that United Healthcare will be replaced as the medical, dental and life insurance carrier. The new dental plans will remain unchanged with a minimal increase, and the life insurance rate will remain unchanged.

Cigna is the new carrier for disability, critical illness and accident insurance.  Disability rates will decrease, and there will be no changes to coverage or cost on the critical illness or accident plans. Dental Select will replace United Healthcare Vision with a small increase in premium; however, coverage was enhanced by allowing new frames and lenses every 12 months instead of every 24 months. Gap and cancer coverage will remain the same.
