HISD Parent Advisory Committee holds first meeting

Harlandale ISD held its first Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting at the Sosa Parent Education Center on Sept. 17.

The committee is comprised of more than 20 parents, who are selected by campus principals to represent their schools. Each meeting aims to strengthen the relationship between the group of parents and Harlandale ISD leaders.

Harlandale ISD Interim Superintendent Samantha Gallegos said the meetings give parents an opportunity to bring forward any questions, concerns and good news from their child’s campus.

“Coming together with the PAC parents is a way to work together as a community to find opportunities to grow and improve student achievement,” Gallegos said. “I hope this is one of many meetings that all of our parents can attend.”

Gallegos shared important district events coming up and encouraged parents and the community to get involved in their child’s education.

Harlandale ISD Police Chief Michael Ramirez talked about new district initiatives including their new campaign aimed to promote student safety called “See Something, Hear Something, Say Something,” where they encourage students, parents and the community to report any suspicious activities to their 24/7 safety line 210-932-SAFE.

Harlandale ISD Family and Adult Education Coordinator Sylvia Servin said the meeting was a success and looks forward to seeing the parents become more engaged in the future.

“Parents were really excited, and everyone had such a positive attitude about starting the year with great information,” Servin said. “We hope that with each meeting, our parents become more empowered to represent themselves, their schools, and their community because that is how we can grow and make it better.”

An additional eight meetings are scheduled to take place during the 2019-2020 school year. The information will also be provided in Spanish.
