Harlandale High School hosts annual CTE College and Career Fair

Harlandale High School hosted its annual College and Career Fair on Dec. 4 to give incoming freshman a glimpse of possible career options and seniors the opportunity to explore all the different Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes offered at their future school.

The event allowed students and families from Harlandale Middle School and Leal Middle School to communicate directly with representatives from various colleges, universities, technical schools, businesses and military branches, as well as learn more about different high school programs and extra-curricular activities.

Throughout the evening, students stopped by informational tables to explore all the available courses offered including broadcast journalism, architecture, auto technology, phlebotomy, choir, mariachi and film. Culinary Arts students were on hand preparing and serving sweet waffles for students and staff to try. Attendees were also able to experience a mass casualty demo done by health science students, as well as enjoy performances by the school’s mariachi group, choir group and dance team.

Current Harlandale High School students were also encouraged to attend to learn more about the courses and different certifications available to them. Through the CTE program, high school students have the opportunity to obtain various certifications including Certified Pharmacy Technician, Automotive Service Excellence Certification and ServSafe® Food Handler Certification.

Local business partners such as McDonald’s, Univision and Wells Fargo also joined the event to spread the word about their programs.

“Our goal is to expose our students to all the different school programs and fields of study available to them,” Harlandale High School CTE Counselor Graciela Gil said. “Knowledge is key, so we hope that by exposing them to all this information, they can be better prepared as they begin their journey into high school or college.”

Parents who wish to learn more about their child’s high school CTE course offering are encouraged to call their campus counselor. For more information about the CTE program at Harlandale ISD, please call (210) 989-4401.
