Harlandale ISD hosts annual College Night

High school and middle school students from across the district discovered future opportunities during Harlandale ISD’s annual College Night on Oct. 30.

This year, the event was hosted at McCollum High School and featured more than 60 local, regional and national institutions of higher learning, as well as military branches.

For McCollum High School College Advisor Lisa Reyes, the event is a great opportunity for students to ask questions regarding admission requirements, scholarships, financial aid and more.

“The biggest question that they have is, ‘How much is it going to cost?’ or ‘How am I going to pay for it?’, and College Night is a great way for them to get that information,” Reyes said. “As we know, each university is different, so any question is a good question.”

Families and students made their way to every table, exploring different career options and collecting informational brochures, flyers and goodie bags from local and out of state colleges and universities.

Ultimately, Reyes hopes College Night encourages students to continue their post-secondary educational goals be it in higher education, the military or vocational colleges after graduation.

“Our goal is to show our students that there is opportunity to go to college,” Reyes added. “It may not always be free, but there are a lot of options. It just depends on how much effort they are willing to put into it.”

The campus is also planning to host a Career Fair on Nov. 20.
