Harlandale ISD welcomes Gov. Abbott’s news on high school graduations

SAN ANTONIO - June 5, 2020 – Harlandale ISD welcomed Gov. Greg Abbott’s news green lighting outside high school graduations during his Tuesday afternoon press conference.

The news provides relief to the Harlandale ISD community who will be able to celebrate the Class of 2020 graduations June 1, 2 and 3 as announced late April. This will make Harlandale ISD one of the first and few San Antonio area school districts to hold an in-person graduation at Memorial Stadium.

Graduation is a momentous celebration and tradition for Harlandale families to recognize students and their accomplishments, and the District is excited to share the news with the community.

Melissa Casey, Harlandale ISD Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, said the district happily received the announcement and welcomed the news with joy.

“Our community is truly rich in traditions and eagerly wanted to celebrate the Class of 2020 in person,” Casey said. “The Board of Trustees and Superintendent Soto wanted this to happen and we were looking for ways to make it possible. Now we will be able to celebrate.”

Some restrictions and additional screening guidelines will be put in place as expressed in the announcement which include limiting the number of guests and the safe practice of social distancing.

Each high school will communicate their plan for seniors including cap and gown distribution and preparation for graduation. Additional graduation details will be shared as they become available.
