Nearly 500 cats and dogs were spayed/neutered, received a rabies shot and a microchip during SNIPSA’s “Big Fix” event held at the Boggess Center on Feb. 1. This is the fourth time Harlandale ISD partners with SNIPSA to offer the free veterinary services to the community.

Harlandale ISD Lead PE and Wellness Facilitator Dolly Armstrong helped organize this year’s annual event with the help of Harlandale ISD staff and Frank Tejeda Academy (FTA) students.

“It has been such an amazing event to be part of and so well worth all the time and energy,” Armstrong said. “The Boggess Center was perfect and SNIPSA was impressed by all it had to offer as it was their 43rd Big Fix!”

FTA students arrived bright and early to assist in different ways from taking pets to their location, cleaning their areas to taking them to get weighed in and even making get well cards for them to take home. Former Harlandale High School Protecting Animals within San Antonio (PAWS) President Sabrina Aparicio returned to support the event and shared her knowledge as she is pursuing a career working with animals.

Armstrong coordinated the logistics to ensure all animals, volunteers and staff needs were met. Staff and students took on different job roles, whether it was being a dog runner, poop scooper or assistant for paperwork.

“It was a great experience to be a part of as we were able to call community families and even staff to come receive the free service,” Armstrong added. “Our FTA students were great as they learned a great deal and have a new passion for animals.  I foresee an opportunity for future collaboration with SNIPSA as to provide volunteer jobs for our students while learning how to be a veterinarian or a veterinarian technician.”

Armstrong thanks everyone involved in making the event a success especially FTA staff, Harlandale High School, MOST and custodial staff for their hard work.

“It was great collaboration of team-work. Thank you Harlandale ISD for going the extra mile for such a great cause,” Armstrong concluded.
