Spirit & Dance

Classes in HISD are intended to provide a basic understanding of dance in a broad sense, covering all forms of dance including social, ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip hop, kick, pom and tap dancing. Time will also be spent on development of kinesthetic awareness, anatomy, fitness, cultural awareness, creativity, choreography and a variety of other skills. Students may receive a fine arts and/or physical education credit from this course. Students in dance will be expected to participate in out of class performances and rehearsals. No prior experience in dance is necessary. The only requirements are an intrinsic desire to do the necessary physical work and the ability to handle a moderate workout.

Within each high school dance department students may participate in the dance team. They are expected to boost school spirit and serve as goodwill ambassadors for the district while developing team building and leadership skills. Dance team membership requires an audition usually held toward the end of the school year

Both high schools spirit departments also have both Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading squads. These squads are selected based on an audition that is usually held toward the end of the semester. Cheerleaders also serve as goodwill ambassadors for the district and provide spirit support at all athletic events.
