San Antonio- The Harlandale Independent School District School Board approved expenditures for employee immigration legal services and expenses following a unanimous vote during the Monday, September 18 meeting.
The expenditures are associated with the H-1B visa program, which allows U.S. employers to hire foreign workers with needed skills for a specified time period. The school board approved the expenditures and expenses as the H-1B visa program is being utilized for the hiring of certified bilingual teachers within the District. Eligibility for the H-1B visa program is determined by proof of education or experience as well as a need for qualified applicants.
“It is no secret that there is a teacher shortage across the country. Here at Harlandale we are being proactive in our recruitment efforts and we know that this initiative will help us attract international talent that will enrich the educational experience for our students,” said Dr. Melinda Salinas, Executive Director of Human Resources at Harlandale ISD.
The district hopes to begin hiring international teachers as soon as possible in order to help fill the currently open teaching positions.
“By bringing diverse perspectives and global expertise into our classrooms, we aim to broaden horizons, foster cultural understanding, and prepare our students for a globally interconnected world. These international educators will play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded, globally aware individuals who are ready to tackle the challenges of the future," said Mr. Gerardo Soto, Superintendent of Schools at Harlandale ISD.
