Get ready for a celestial spectacle!
On Monday, April 8, 2024, we will have the opportunity to witness a rare and awe-inspiring sight: a total solar eclipse! During this incredible phenomenon, the Moon completely covers the Sun, blocking its entire disk. This results in a brief period of darkness known as totality, where the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, becomes visible. Total solar eclipses are mesmerizing celestial events but are only visible within a narrow path on Earth. Harlandale ISD is lucky to be near the path of totality, meaning we'll experience a few minutes of darkness during the peak of the eclipse. Students and staff across Harlandale ISD will be able to see 99.884% obscuration at 1:34.09 P.M.
Safety First!
To ensure everyone at Harlandale ISD can experience this historic event safely, we are providing every staff member and student solar eclipse glasses. These specially certified glasses will provide safe viewing of the eclipse, allowing you to witness the sun like never before.
It's important to remember that looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can severely damage your eyes. The special eclipse glasses are the only safe way to observe the eclipse. Harlandale ISD will provide these glasses, and teachers will ensure proper use during the designated viewing times.
