Cultural Arts Mural

Last school year, 12th grade student Samantha Monzon Carrillo and 11th grade student Jocelyn Quintero were selected as youth muralists with the local organization San Anto Cultural Arts. Over the spring and summer, they recently completed a community mural focused on the connection between the Southside and Westside of San Antonio. Alongside a Lanier High School student, the youth facilitated numerous meetings in spring 2023 to gather ideas from both the Southside and Westside communities.

Using the feedback from these meetings, the students were inspired to create a mural they titled "The Protected Path to New Beginnings." On Saturday, August 19th, the youth muralists hosted a dedication and blessing ceremony. A dozen McCollum High School staff attended to support Samantha and Jocelyn. District 5 San Antonio City Councilwoman Teri Castillo was also excited to meet them. We are so happy to celebrate Samantha and Jocelyn's accomplishment in representing the Southside "con orgullo."
