Today, we celebrate Día de los Muertos, a tradition rooted in pre-Hispanic culture, where families would gather to guide their loved ones’ souls to Mictlán, the underworld of Aztec mythology.
It is believed that the souls of those no longer with us return to visit on this day. Families create altars at their resting places, decorated with cempasúchil (marigold flowers), papel picado, sugar skulls and their favorite foods. Paths of marigold petals and candles traditionally help guide the souls from home to cemetery and back.
Día de los Muertos embraces life through the memory of loved ones. As this tradition evolves, it remains a cherished celebration of family.
